Illuminated see-saws have taken over Broadway in the Garment District!
The other night while walking through the Garment District, I saw something I had never seen before – giant illuminated see-saws smack dab in the middle of Broadway! It turns out this is the Garment District’s brand new installation: Impulse. Impulse is a collection of twelve see-saws varying from 16-24 feet that emits various sounds when you play on it! I like, many other passersby, jumped to experience this new playground in the Urban Jungle. I jumped on with my friend and photographer Jill and we carefully took some shots and experienced the installation in its entirety.
As we experienced the literal ups and downs of the Garment District, we took in the reactions of the people around us. There were locals coming out of surrounding offices who seemed pleasantly surprised by this new little playground in the city. Families walking by stopped as their children rushed to get a place in line to go next. Every person who came across the installation seemed to be struck with child-like energy and immediately wanted a turn. There was a very inclusive feel to it, as some people were on their own and groups warmly welcomed them to join in on the fun. We quickly realized that each see-saw can actually fit up to 4 riders, so it’s suitable for both families and friend groups. All in all, it’s basically a playground for New Yorkers of all ages and the perfect way to de-stress and feel like a kid again!
The installation is accessible both day and night, making it perfect for the city that never sleeps. I can definitely see people taking advantage of it during their lunch break or making it a light-hearted way to end date night. While it is definitely a must-see any time of day, it is particularly magical at night as the see-saws are fully illuminated and your view is the bright lights of Time Square cast against the skyline.
